Conclusion: Meet User Needs
So what can be deduced from combining these pivotal learning points, along with countless others, acquired during this Masters program? I am left to conclude that the most important goal to be kept in mind is that of meeting users needs. To not meet the needs of its users is to fail as a library. In the case of a school library, I will need to meet both student needs and classroom teacher needs.
Collaboration is important to teacher librarianship but must be undertaken with meeting students needs at the forefront of the minds of those involved.
Information literacy is significant to teacher librarianship, so long as it has the needs of the users as its purpose and goal.
Collection management is a necessity for all librarians, but must be undertaken with the needs of the users it serves as the focus.
As I discovered in my blog post The role of the teacher librarian – some authors’ views (MacDonald, 2012b), a teacher librarian must perform many roles and wear many hats, but so long as the roles are performed with the goal of meeting the needs of their users, the important work of a teacher librarian will be fulfilled.
